Research and Methods

Nicole Janz is a PhD candidate at the Department of Politics and International Studies (POLIS) at Cambridge University. Her research focuses on foreign investment, corporate social responsibility (CSR) and labor standards. Before that she analyzed American Civil Religion. Her research is guided by the following topics:

 

Business and Human Rights

  • What is the impact of multinational corporations and their investment on labor rights?
  • How do companies recognize and take responsibility for human rights?
  • What drives CSR commitment of MNCs in developing countries?

Philosophy of Human Rights

  • How do different religions and cultures contribute to international human rights standards?
  • Can Western concepts of human rights be applied to other cultures?

Mixed Methods Research

  • Interviews, (legal) document analysis, coding, critical discourse analysis
  • Cross-country time series analysis, multiple imputation, graphics in R
  • Intensive mixed methods training and panel data analysis at Essex Summer School (2011, 2012)

American Civil Religion

  • How did George W. Bush utilize civil religious themes (freedom, mission, rebirth) after September 11 in his rhetoric?
  • Did former George W. Bush use overly religious language?
